or the castle

But that's not the castle - it's the old court building which is now converted into private homes. The real Morpeth Castle is in Carlisle Park.
The clock tower is used on the Visit Morpeth - Historic Market Town signs on the A1 and it's well recognized by many in and around Morpeth. You might consider the Hollon Fountain, but the clock tower really is the only viable as a symbol of the town.

If it had to be a building - but it doesn't necessarily. Arguments against are that it's pretty plain and non distinctive. That's in the sense that you might get away with using the same graphic for other places and no one would notice. Or am I wrong there?
Thinking about it my main associations with Morpeth (as a child) would be the river and feeding the ducks. The river is more a part of the town than it is with many other riverside towns.

I used the word `castle` just because that`s what i`ve always called it. But you`re correct, it is the court house, but that`s still one of the main things i think of when i think of Morpeth. Isn`t that where the police station is now? Or it`s behind the court house rather.
The other thing is the `clock` in Carlisle Park, although, the last time i was there it had been planted over.

I just gave you a rep by accident there, not saying your post isn`t good but i meant to reply not rep
Funny that you just mentioned the river, i had just been looking up things about Morpeth and found this bit of info `The town's motto is 'Inter Sylvas at Flumina Habitans' which means 'Living amid the Woods and Water'
When you think about it, that`s a good description of Morpeth.

Conker trees?
You get conker trees all over the country, i doubt if folk will automatically think of Morpeth when you mention `conker trees`
At least you tried

At least you tried
Sorry but anyone from the area associates Morpeth with the best supply of conkers! Hence CONKER TREES
